The boys played in the water while I began a brief hike along the trail. It was then I thought: “Alone, what would I do if a bear suddenly appeared?” and cautiously retreated to the parking area. Later that night I overheard a conversation between two men about how “the girls were fine” after their walk around the lake was interrupted by the sighting of a bear cub as they neared the end of   the path. Correctly taught to avoid the parent, they doubled back the way they came, it now taking twice the time to circumference the lake and sending parents and park rangers into a temporary panic. That could easily have been me.
